Electronic mailing lists

We have two Internet mailing lists exclusively for STC RMC members and student members:

If you'd like to learn more about mailing lists, read these questions and answers. If you're an STC RMC member and you're already familiar with mailing lists, skip to How Do I Join?.

Why do we need mailing lists?

One of the best things about STC membership is discussing technical communication with our peers:

"How can I convert FrameMaker to HTML?"
"Where can I find a boilerplate contract?"
"I'm looking for work; has anyone heard anything?"

To have these discussions, we typically go to a chapter meeting. For the Rocky Mountain Chapter, though, this can be difficult. Our members work all over the Front Range, from Parker to Laramie, from Scottsbluff to Idaho Springs. We work a lot of overtime. And sometimes we need answers right away.

Nothing can replace the face-to-face contact we get at STC meetings. So we have an additional way to communicate: the STC Rocky Mountain Chapter's Internet mailing list, techcomm-discuss. This list is exclusively for members and student members of the STC Rocky Mountain Chapter. The list server is hosted by Colorado Online.

To better serve our community members, we added a second mailing list in October 2006 - stcrmc-jobs. This mailing list is used exclusively to notify subscribers of new jobs posted to the STC RMC jobline.

What is a mailing list?

A mailing list lets you send e-mail to a whole bunch of people at one time. So with a single e-mail message to techcomm-discuss, you can reach every STC Rocky Mountain Chapter member who belongs to the list.

How do mailing lists work?

Our mailing lists are controlled by a program called "listproc" on Colorado Online's Internet list server.

First, you have to tell the listproc program that you want to join. This is called "subscribing," and you do it by sending e-mail to listproc.

Suppose you've already subscribed. Whenever you want to send e-mail to every member of our list, you'd just send e-mail to the list name-- "stcrmc" in our case. That's a lot easier than typing 437 e-mail addresses!

Why should I join the STC RMC mailing list?

It's an easy, efficient way to reach local and regional technical communicators. For example, you might ask questions:

  • Questions about freelancing
  • Questions about becoming a tech communicator
  • Requests for brainstorming on technical, editorial, or design problems (we wrote this article by asking list members for suggestions!)

Or you might make announcements:

  • Meeting announcements, seminar announcements
  • Job leads (subject to certain rules which you'll see when you join the list)

What do I need to use this list?

All you need is plain old e-mail.

Is the STC RMC mailing list the same as the techwr-l mailing list?

No. Both are mailing lists for technical communicators, but with different membership.

techwr-l is open to anyone in the world. The STC RMC mailing list is only for STC Rocky Mountain Chapter members, and it has different rules; you'll see these rules when you join the list.

How do I join?

  • To join techcomm-discuss, send an email to the list manager with the following information:
    • Your name.
    • Your email address.
    • Whether you would like the immediate or digest version of the list.
  • To join stcrmc-jobs, send an email to the list manager with the following information:
    • Your name.
    • Your email address.
    • Whether you would like the immediate or digest version of the list.

Note: With the immediate version, you will receive each email message as soon as it is sent. With the digest version, approximately once a day you will receive one email message containing all the messages since the last digest.

The list manager will verify your STC RMC membership and add you to the list.

New STC members: After you send in your STC dues, please wait a couple of weeks before contacting the list manager. This will give STC International time to process your membership application.

See you on the list!
