Officer & Manager Duties

Responsibilities of Officers and Managers

Running for chapter office or participating as an RMC manager is a great way to get involved in the chapter, hone your craft, and develop your leadership skills.

Officers

Each year the RMC elects a new vice president, secretary, treasurer, and two members of the nominating committee. When voted in, the vice president automatically advances to president and then past president each subsequent year. The duties of each officer are summarized below. 

  • Vice President
    Term: 3 years (automatically advances to President and then Past President)
    Monthly commitment: 3-10 hours, including monthly Council meeting
    Duties: Attend council and chapter meetings to get a feel for the chapter committees and procedures. After 1 year, advance to President and produce the monthly eblast, preside at council and chapter meetings, and represent the chapter for any queries. The third year, advise the incoming VP.  Essential qualities include enthusiasm, energy, responsibility, and good problem-solving skills.

  • Secretary
    Term: 1 program year (September to May)
    Monthly commitment: 2-3 hours, including monthly Council meeting
    Duties: Attend monthly Council meetings, record and post minutes, and track action items.
    Benefits: Refine your listening and note-taking skills; voting member of the Executive Council. Read more
  • Treasurer
    Term: 1 program year (September to May)
    Monthly commitment: 2-4 hours, including monthly Council meeting
    Duties: Track and manage RMC finances: submit required reports, draft annual budget, and record and reconcile several transactions per month. Requires knowledge of Excel.
    Benefits: As a voting member of the Executive Council, you have an important voice in Chapter decisions. Read more
  • President
    Term: 1 year as President after VP year.
    Monthly commitment: 20+ hours
    Duties: Conduct meetings of the chapter administrative council and regular chapter meetings including annual business meeting, write and publish monthly eblast, assign duties to officers and appoint assistants or committees as needed, represent RMC for external inquiries, supply fiscal guidelines, and help form chapter policy, goals, and objectives.

  • Past President
    Term: 1 year after President year. 
    Monthly commitment: 3-10 hours, including monthly Council meeting
    Duties: The president automatically moves to the position of immediate past president for the year following their presidential term. The past president continues to serve as a voting member of the executive council. The primary task is to advise and mentor the incoming VP.
    Benefits: Pass on that valuable experience and continue to shape the chapter direction. Read more
  • Nominating Committee (2 members)
    Term: 1 program year (most activity occurs between January and May)
    Monthly commitment: 4-8 hours
    Duties: Identify and invite candidates to run for office, and administer the chapter election using SurveyMonkey.
    Benefits: Get to know your fellow RMC members and refine your communication skills. Read more
