Technical Writer I

Summary

The person holding this non-supervisory, full-time position must be able to create courseware for the purpose of training Cadpo clients on select MCAD/CAM engineering software. The Technical Writer needs to have a strong technical aptitude and willingness to become familiar with engineering concepts. He or she must also be comfortable with sharing software knowledge through written or audio/visual means. The Technical Writer must be comfortable working in a team environment, not afraid to seek advice and assistance, and willing to share information.

The work requires following a systematic process that begins by evaluating documentation needs with a needs analysis. These needs are recorded in a documentation plan. From here, the Technical Writer writes, edits, and formats content using a custom-designed Authoring Tool.

To complete the above process, the Technical Writer must be able to create content that conforms to technical and organizational standards, based on the Cadpo Style Guide, with intent to meet or exceed all specific project requirements. This person receives instruction on specific assignments and possible solutions from the team lead.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Regularly increases personal knowledge of MCAD/CAM software.
  • Seeks ways to improve quality and internal work processes.
  • Defines, documents, and understands project expectations and technical requirements with assistance from designated subject matter expert and/or team lead.
  • Estimates times-to-complete projects and recommends time values for project quotations as necessary.
  • Anticipates project problems and delays, but more importantly offers solutions to project difficulties.
  • Maintains up-to-date project documentation.
  • Develops content using standards from the Cadpo Style Guide.
  • Manages and documents changes to project definitions or client expectations.
  • Seeks to enhance internal department relationships to the benefit of Cadpo.
  • Readily assists fellow co-workers by answering technical and non-technical questions.
  • Creates courses using text and audio/visual means with minimal input from engineers, and with minimal technical and grammatical errors.

Qualifications

  • Proven ability to write complex documentation

  • MS Office programs: Word, Excel

  • 2-3 years experience in the field or in a related area
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures
  • CAD/CAM experience helpful, but not required

Minimum required skills:

  • Strong experience with Adobe Framemaker (Version 7.1) and related Adobe products (Acrobat 6.0 Professional). 
  • Experience with single-sourcing and related tools, ideally WebWorks Publisher (Version 2003 and higher). 
  • BA in Technical Writing, English, Journalism, or equivalent experience preferred.

Other desired skills:

  • Experience with creating online training materials, ideally with RoboDemo/Captivate.
  • Experience with HTML help and web-based help systems.
  • Ability to review user-interface designs for usability.
  • Experience in accounting preferred, but not required.
