The Senior Technical Writer is an independent self-starter who will write and edit printed material for consumer devices. The position is temporary for a 3 month contract. Weekly hours may vary from 40 to 60 hours.

The Writer is only required to be on-site with the client 1or 2 days a week and work from home all other times. At home, the Writer must have access to good Internet connections and have the following software: Framemaker 6, Acrobat 5, Photoshop 7, and Illustrator 10

Essential Job Duties

  • Develops, writes, and edits drafts and final deliverables for review by the customer.
  • Researches information about the product by interviewing subject-matter experts and using the product.
  • Attends internal project and review meetings.
  • Ensures that all deliverables are reviewed by the designated QA person before the deliverables go to the client.
  • Performs quality checks on other writer's deliverables and ensures quality of his/her own work before handoff to localization and printing

Required Qualifications:

  • College degree in related area.
  • 6+  years experience as a technical writer recommended.
  • Must have proven experience of writing concise, succinct material.
  • Proficiency with the required applications: FrameMaker, Acrobat, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Experience in developing at least 3 of the following types of documentation: user manuals, service manuals, reference manuals, online help, white papers, technical information sheets, technical reports, training materials.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous job experience in a high-technology consumer devices industry highly desirable.
  • Understanding of hardware and software (drivers, installers, utilities), product development, and product integration.
  • Excellent skills in these areas recommended: customer service, interpersonal skills, communication (verbal, written, presentation), time management, problem solving and quality control

Technical Writer

Purpose of Position

The primary role of this position is to create documentation to support the company's products through the development and maintenance of analytical procedures, manuals and other technical documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Obtains information from Product Managers, Engineers, Chemists, and the Quality Assurance Department to develop documentation. 
  • Creates manuals, instruction sheets, analytical procedures & specification sheets and other documentation.
  • Coordinates the production of appropriate drawings by the Business Unit or Technical Illustrator to support written instructions. 
  • Attends meetings for new products as required to produce written technical support. 
  • Follows ISO procedures for starting new projects, obtaining reviews, and coordinating internal department checks.
  • Performs writer checks for other technical writers.

Background and Skill Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. 
  • Master's degree or 2-5 years experience in a Technical Publication/Technical Communication desired. 
  • Laboratory experience or other experience with analytical chemistry procedures.
  • Basic word processing software (Microsoft Word).
  • Desktop publishing skills to create and manipulate new and existing documentation are essential (experience with Frame Maker, Robo-Help and FrontPage software preferred).

Online and Electronic Documentation Specialist/Technical Writer 

I am looking for an Online and Electronic Documentation Specialist/Technical Writer for a project for the USDA Forest Service in the Denver/Lakewood, CO area. The project is due to start as soon as I can fill the position. This is a direct hire and would be an employee of Anteon and then contracted to the Forest Service. This is a one year project with a possible 6 months to one year extension.

Minimum/General Experience: Must have four years' experience in information systems development, technical writing, technical documentation or related fields. Must have two years specialized experience, such as experience in developing and providing end-user documentation in both hard copy/electronic and online/web-based formats. Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing. Develop, coordinate and participate in preparing project plans and design documents for several  projects for the US Forest Service, including Project and Contract Statements of Work, Project Plan, User's Guides and Quick Reference Guides, data dictionaries and online help documentation.· Ability to organize, develop and write project plans, technical manuals and training materials for the several projects at the
same time. Solve and troubleshoot complex user software issues and instruct personnel to solve fire-related software and general office software issues.· Develop and implement a uniform approach and style of documentation.

Software Experience (at least two years): Microsoft Office products, HTML, DreamWeaver (or other web design programs) required; PhotoShop, Illustrator, Freehand or other design packages are highly desirable.

SUMMARY: This position provides web interface design leadership in the team that designs, develops, tests, implements, and maintains Time Warner Telecom web sites, including intranet, extranet, and Internet sites. We author full design and operational documentation sets for major DoD software systems. In connection with the deployment of space-based surveillance systems for missile warning, missile defense, battle space characterization and technical intelligence, we are developing and producing an Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) for a centralized Mission Control Station and world-wide relay stations.

These are full time, permanent positions for highly technically oriented and knowledgeable individuals with proven experience in developing hardware maintenance and troubleshooting manuals. Familiarity with writing military specification technical manuals for space system operations, satellite ground stations, mobile systems, and/or telecommunication systems is a definite plus. An Electrical Engineering or Computer Maintenance background is preferred. Primary assignment is to develop and author from "scratch", detailed troubleshooting and fault isolation procedures utilizing engineering/software development personnel input, equipment manuals, "hands-on" system operation, etc. These are NOT technical editing positions.

  • Vice President: Helps form chapter policy, goals, and objectives. Fills in for president as necessary. Attends the Chapter Leaders Workshop at the Region 7 Conference. Automatically moves to the position of president for the year following the election. (3-5 hours per week)
  • Secretary: Takes minutes at administrative council meetings. Writes brief descriptions of chapter meetings for Technicalities. (2-4 hours per week)
  • Treasurer: Establishes and monitors chapter budget and maintains all financial accounts. Deposits chapter funds and pays invoices. Prepares monthly reports of chapter income and expenditures and a detailed year-end report. (3-5 hours per week)
  • Nominating Committee: Invites members to run for office. Runs election and reports results. (1-2 hours per week)
