The Conference Presently Known as Successful

by Jay Mead

The tumult and the shouting have died, but not the warm feeling brought by the Region 7 Conference in October. As you surely know by now, the conference was a runaway success, attracting 350 attendees from all over the U.S. and Canada. Presentations were informative and enthusiastically received, the downtown Denver location was ideal, and of course the company was fascinating. And chapter members should know that, because of very strong attendance, the conference budget shows a gain, adding to the financial strength of our chapter.

In the archives of this newsletter you’ll see a list of the volunteers who helped make the conference such a success. Let me highlight one of these volunteers: Barb Miller has worked tirelessly for more than a year to bring this conference together, and her organization and energy as conference committee chair helped ensure our success. The chapter owes Barb a big thank you.

Chapter Communication: An Important Issue

In the spirit of our conference theme, “The Medium Formerly Known as Print” (I just had to write that phrase one more time!), our chapter, too, is moving beyond print as a medium of chapter member communication. The next year will see significant changes in the way the chapter communicates with members. Here is what’s happening:

Web site: Chapter Vice President Ben Johnson is heading up an enthusiastic committee of volunteers to deal with Web site issues, including enlarging the site and increasing the content, as well as continuing to update its design. The Web site will become one of our most important means of communication with members. Bookmark it and visit it regularly: http://stcrmc.org/.

Mailing list: Many of you are members of the STC RMC mailing list, home of occasional spirited debates on matters pertaining to technical communication. I would like to see all members on the list, so that we can easily and quickly communicate across our membership, and foster the kind of community that the chapter would like to help create. If you are not a member, sign up! E-mail Ben for information: ben@stcrmc.org.

Newsletter: We have a fine newsletter put out by three volunteers. Recently, council members have asked whether we should transfer some or all of the newsletter content to the Web, as has been done in other STC chapters. What do you think? Please let me know: feedback@stcrmc.org.
